The numbers in the title are shocking. They indicate that we need to rethink our legacy to the planet and reflect on the causes of this deforestation. These are data from the global report on life on Earth released today, November 30, 2018, by WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature).
In the Living Planet Report 2018 the organization presented data from all over the world. It is a biennial study and it signals to us that we are globally exhausting the natural resources that make human survival on Earth sustainable. In Brazil, the scenario is quite alarming. Since 1970, we have deforested 20% of the Amazon Rainforest and 50% of our Cerrado.
Destroying biomes that are so important to the country causes direct harm to the species that live here. The bald uakari and southern muriqui monkeys, the jandaia parakeet, the Brazilian three-banded armadillo, and the river dolphin are some of the animals that are on the list of those at risk of extinction due to deforestation presented in the current report.
